Step-by-Step PR Guide (All Routes)

Choose your route after checking points and eligibility conditions. Always confirm the latest requirements with ISA/MOJ.

  1. Step 1: Identify your PR route
Common routes include: General 10-year route, HSP points route (70+ / 80+), Spouse/Child of Japanese or PR, Long-Term Resident, Refugee, and Contribution to Japan routes.
  2. Step 2: Check core PR requirements
Good conduct, stable livelihood, and compliance with taxes/social insurance/public obligations are standard baseline requirements.
  3. Step 3: Match your route-specific timeline
General route is typically 10 years in Japan with 5 years on a work/residence status. HSP 70 points can apply after 3 years; 80 points after 1 year. Spouse/child and other special routes may allow shorter timelines.
  4. Step 4: Prepare standard documents
Common items: PR application form, photo, passport/residence card, statement of reasons, tax and social insurance certificates, and guarantor documents.
  5. Step 5: Add route-specific evidence
HSP route: point calculation form and proof for each item. Spouse route: relationship proof. Contribution route: official recognition or contribution evidence.
  6. Step 6: Submit at the regional immigration bureau
Applications are filed in Japan. Check current forms, fees, and your regional bureau rules.
  7. Step 7: Respond to follow-up requests
ISA may request additional documents. Quick replies reduce delays.
  8. Step 8: Approval and residence card update
Once approved, you receive the PR status and must update your residence card.
